Following Jesus

To know meaning and purpose, to know the nature of our response and protest, to be committed to humility and awareness, to be and do and relate in the story of life everlasting. To have sorrow and imagination in this life, and joy unspeakable and incomparable peace in the next. To love even unto death but yet simply obedient and submitted in life.

For to know my Jesus is worth more than any other. He is the way that steadies my journey, the love that carries me through all struggles, the peace that surpasses all understanding, the hope in an eternal future. In Him I am the recipient of grace and forgiveness, acceptance and affirmation. I am in Christ and Christ is in me.

May we love with an eternal love as we sorrow and imagine... For we serve an awesome God!

Understanding Jesus...

This passage in McLaren's book Everything Must Change really stuck out to me... thought I'd share it with you...

Quoting Jesus' words from Matthew 26:11 to defend a complacency to the poor becomes manifestly ridiculous when one looks at the passage of the Old Testament Jesus is himself quoting: Deuteronomy 15. After saying, 'There will always be poor people in the land,' the text says, 'Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward...the poor and needy in your land.' (v. 11). And earlier in the chapter (v. 4) we read, 'However, there should be no poor among you,' because the land can produce an abundance for all if that abundance is fairly distributed through a just legal system...It's risky business to superficially quote Jesus!

So we must carefully seek to determine not just what Jesus said, but what he meant, and how he would have been heard by his original hearers. Only then can we venture to explore what his original meaning would mean for us today, and even then, we must do so with great humility and awareness of our amazing human capacity to be wrong. This process is far more complex than simply marshaling quotes, and it is also more fruitful. It requires more than an ability to lift quotations out of context and fire them at an opponent like a missile. It requires the ability to get a sense for the shape, feel, and direction of Jesus' life and words, in the swirl and spin of his times, and find patterns of resonance with our own...
